Project:
The big (new) lock chamber in Brunsbüttel was opened for traffic in 1914. After more than 100 years of operation, a general rehabilitation of the solid construction, of the hydraulic steel structures as well as of the mechanical and electrotechnical facilities was urgently necessary for maintenance of transport and operating safety. To prevent disruption of vessel traffic during the period of rehabilitation, a 5th lock chamber is required. The length of this chamber is approx. 360 m, its width is approx. 45 m. The chamber will be suitable to accommodate ships up to a maximum width of approx. 44 m and a maximum draught up to 11 m.
